Ian Klinkhamer’s Heirs to Theseus is probably his quickest, laziest effort, but even as such it shows some of the brilliance that marks such extremely not quick & lazy scenarios like Redemption. Unfortunately, not that much brilliance. My score is five of ten.
Theseus is straightforward and brief: combat, combat, and more combat, indirectly related to Ian’s other, better work. The combat get tedious, although it is challenging, be it with the party provided or my own, theoretically less-abled Level 1 group. The included party is recommended, and it gives the adventure a uniqueness to accompany its hack-n-slash.
The combat would be more palatable were it accompanied with something, anything — but it’s not. The ending is a let-down from both reward and narrative-based perspectives.
There are no bugs, although a major gripe of mine is that the player fails at the scenario simply by leaving the fort. Given that the south exit is totally undefined (no wall or gate), accidentally leaving is quite possible, and you get quite screwed.
Ultimately, Theseus could benefit from just a few more hours of work. It never will be nor was it ever intended to be a great epic, but it could still be a pretty good, short scenario. As of now, unfortunately, it’s not.
