When I picked another scenario to review, I went to the First Efforts Page to see if any were better than the review that they already had. I picked Castle Perilous. The name implies to me that it is a four level dungeon, with lots of nodes and prisoners and such. It is nothing like that.
The nodes are horrible. Some nodes ask for a key to get through a door and you don’t need it! There is also the tiny bit of plot. All you know is that you are fighting captains to rescue the princess. In 1 medium and 1 small level. The small town is very under developed, and most of the medium town is pointless. It seems they spent 1–3 weeks only, on the scenario. My scenario took me the latter side of 6 months, and it is only 10 towns and 2 outdoor sections.
I do have to acknowledge that some bits are clever. You have to bash down a door with a log. You also can get killed unawares in the security chamber. Each of your party members gets 2599 points of damage dumped on them 3 times. You need the security pass, but you don’t know that.
My advice is find another scenario that actually has dialogue! This scenario had zippo personalities. The closest you get are at the most, 3 messages that pop up. One is utterly useless. It is an imprisoned troglo warrior that says it will help you if you free it. What use is that with it going after archers in places that it can’t get to?
Be free of this scenario. Go get Truffle Days or Tatterdemalion if you want a real scenario, not one you can beat in 10 minutes. This is true! I rate it a 4.5, because it is actually beatable. It is for medium parties, but I advise any level is good. Even level 50!
